Fantasy Faire 2023 – Sialdor

Sialdor, A foggy Victorian city. [Great, more flat lighting.] However, the lamps are not lit by gas, but by magical orbs. Magic is the stock in trade of the city. It imports what it needs by selling magical artifacts made here.

The secrets of the magic are protected. Those over time who have come to steal the secrets have never returned from the city.

A giant, dark grey figure hovers on a pillar of ice blue-green water, or is it fire? In the background is a stone wall and part of a building covered in vines.

A floating golem greets me as I enter the city. He bows in a welcoming way if I touch him. A mindless automaton, or the trapped soul of one of those outsiders who unwisely sought the city’s secrets?

[At the end of the tour a couple days ago, Dacien mentioned that “The golems are a cornerstone of the city. They helped build it’s initial structures and now still function to defend and serve it in some tasks. Most are soulless constructs given jobs to ease the lives of others. There are tales that in the past some loyal defenders of the city left their souls to be placed in constructs so that through the eons going forward they could defend it still.”]

A dark urban Victorian street recedes into the background. In the foreground, an old style broom can be seen cleaning the pavement with no one to operate it. More such brooms can be seen in the distance.

The city’s magical nature is not one of these secrets. The street sweepers tell you immediately that you’re not in just any ordinary city.

If while browsing the shops you duck down an alley and jump a fence or two, you find yourself in a hidden garden with enormous old trees and tall grass that appears to be tasseling with glowing seed heads. Eventually you may wind your way to a secluded black sand beach where the sea quietly laps the shore as aurora shimmer in the sky.

Several enormous hardwood trees rise in the middle distance. Stone walls are on either side of them. It would take a half dozen people to span the trunks with their arms. Tall grass surrounds the trees. There are glowing lights at the top of the grass stems. Barely to be seen, the head of a woman with white hair pokes just out of the grass between two of the trees.
